We were saddened a couple of days
ago to say good-bye to our new friend, Gellie, the smaller of the two wonderful
dogs we’ve been caring for here at Cerro Velero. The owner had decided last month it was time
to find a permanent home for her as she is truly a loving family dog and the
frequent changeover of house sitters wasn’t the best environment for
Gellie. Not to say she isn’t a very social pooch – she
is!
But Gellie
is now part of a wonderful family Henry and Margaret Escudero who own the La
Loma Jungle Lodge and Chocolate farm on Isla Bastimentos. Gellie will still be
living in the jungle but she'll be sharing her days with Lucha, a delightful
4-and-a-half-year old boy (and he stressed that half year as very important!) Even before the family left Lucha and Gellie
were wallowing on the floor rubbing noses. It was easy to see they are going to
be great pals.
So, as sad
as we felt for ourselves, and even more for Sharon, the owner who has had
Gellie for something like five years, we
do feel that Gellie is going to have a happier life on her new island.
The other
dog, Indy, short for Independence, seems unaffected by Gellie’s departure. Go figure. But then she does live up to her name. J
But Indy does like routine and structure, so when after midnight
fireworks to ring in the New Year, I overslept
until 8:30AM (rather than my usual 6AM) this morning, she met me at the stairs
with a hearty greeting as if to say, “Where have you been? I missed you!”
I woke this morning to the howls of junngle monkeys. We aired out Landfall and pumped her bilge, then took Crickett for a tour of the bay next to ours, the one they call "The Darkland." WE
ve an invitations to dinner at the neighbors tonight. I say it's a very good day in paradise; Norm says 19 more days to go. J
